After previously working in education with hard to reach and vulnerable groups, Andrea’s experiences during her birth and new mothering journey lead her to consider a new path.
After a relatively straight forward birth with Jake, Andrea initially reflected on the experience as quite a positive one. However, over time and through her interest in birth, she began to question what a ‘positive birth’ really meant and how it can affect early parenting. Becoming an antenatal teacher with the NCT felt like an obvious choice as it would combine her wealth of educational experience with a passion for supporting families through this vulnerable, yet exciting time.
Two years later, after the birth of Issac and now immersed in the birth and early parenting world, Andrea really wanted to continue supporting parents beyond the traditional ‘goodbyes’ of the NCT reunion. She had already trained with The International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM) which is the largest and longest standing worldwide association solely dedicated to baby massage.
Andrea firmly believes that everyone deserves good quality, reliable, evidence based antenatal education, and has seen the difference this education can make to the birth and postnatal experiences of women and their families. With that in mind and the reduction in local hospital based provision, The Best Start was conceived.
From pregnancy, through to parenting, The Best Start provides a place where families can come to find reliable information, support and expert advice to guide, and inform, them through the challenges of becoming a parent. The Best Start Magazine is the only NHS approved publication being distributed to thousands of expectant families via midwives, children’s centres and health care professionals across Calderdale and Kirklees.
Over 9 years later, Andrea has established herself as one of the most respected and knowledgable birth and parenting experts in the region. Her courses are trusted by parents who report feeling more confident and positive as a result of their new found skills and information. Andrea’s fun personality also makes for a relaxed, welcoming learning environment with many parents coming to back to her again for support across the full range of areas the courses cover.
Andrea has written for the My Week section of her local newspaper , has contributed to an article on ‘Love Bombing’ for Juno Magazine and writes the majority of the articles in The Best Start Magazine.
